A small mouth
Kleinmond sits in the Overstrand, on the Whale Coast of the Western Cape. The name means “small mouth” in Afrikaans — the Bot River lagoon meeting the sea. Wikipedia and local histories place it about 90 km east of Cape Town, between Betty's Bay and Hermanus, inside the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve.
It is still a village in scale. Census 2011 counted a few thousand residents in the main place; holiday season multiplies the noise and the bread queues. That seasonal swing is not a flaw to hide. It is how the town actually works.
What holds the place together
Mountain behind, lagoon beside, ocean in front. The Kogelberg Nature Reserve borders the town. A Blue Flag beach draws Western Cape holidaymakers. Wild horses still use the wetland at Rooisand. From June to November, southern right whales use the coastline to mate and calf.
You can live a full week here without a mall. You cannot live a full medical or shopping life without Hermanus or, sometimes, Cape Town. Both statements are true.
