Start with the main beach
Kleinmond's main beach is a Blue Flag beach and the postcard most people arrive with. It is popular with South African holidaymakers, especially in December. The light is generous. The wind can be less generous. Bring a jersey even in summer.
This is not a tropical swimming pool. The Atlantic is the Atlantic. Many families swim, play, and walk rather than log long ocean sessions. Rock pools and the lagoon give children other water.
Lagoon and mouth
The Bot River lagoon is the other personality of the town: calmer water, birdlife, kayaks, and the wild horses on the Rooisand flats. The mouth — the “small mouth” — is where geography becomes a story. Stand there and you understand the name.
Quieter water
Locals talk about stretches beyond the busiest sand — including calmer pockets towards Sandown Bay — where the south-easter is kinder. Conditions change. Do not treat any cove as a secret you are owed. Treat the sea with respect, and ask someone who swam yesterday.
If you want to live near the beach
Sea-front living here means salt on windows, wind on outdoor furniture, and a view that still stops you. It also means holiday traffic on certain streets.
