The horses that do not belong to anyone

Johan · Rooisand Nature Reserve · 5 min · 2026-04-02

There is a herd of wild horses in the marshlands by the Bot River lagoon. They are believed to be South Africa's only wild horses living in a wetland habitat. Locals will tell you versions of how they got there. The honest version is: we do not get to write their story for them.

Go early. Stay in your car or on the path. Do not chase a photograph. The point of Kleinmond is not that everything is available. Some things remain slightly out of reach — and that is part of why people stay.
